The importance of caring for your gums
Your gums may seem like a relatively minor body part, but they’re very tightly linked to your overall health. For example, gum disease and inflammation are proven to be associated with a number of serious conditions, including strokes, heart attacks and Alzheimer’s disease. And, pregnant women have a much higher risk of giving birth to low-weight babies if they have gum disease.
As such, it’s critical to take care of your gums – not only for your oral health, but for the rest of your body as well. With laser bacterial reduction, we’re able to eradicate periodontal disease, promote healing and destroy the very bacteria that contributes to inflammation – so you can be as healthy and happy as possible.
Benefits of laser bacterial reduction
We recommend laser bacterial reduction to many of our Northridge & Woodland Hills patients who are suffering with gum disease and inflammation, simply because it is so effective and offers a number of incredible benefits, including:
- Eliminate harmful bacteria and prevent it from entering the bloodstream.
- Eradicate the bacteria that causes gum disease before it leads to a severe infection and tooth loss.
- Reduce your risk of developing gum disease.
- Improve your overall health.
Restoring your oral health with laser bacterial reduction
We will perform your laser bacterial reduction in the comfort of our Northridge office. You can expect the entire treatment experience to be completely pain-free and last approximately ten to fifteen minutes. To begin the procedure, we will apply a powerful local anesthetic to ensure you experience no pain. From there, we will apply the laser to hard-to-reach areas in and around your gum pockets, where harmful bacteria tends to accumulate. In this way, we will destroy any bacteria that is present and promote healing in the area.
Is laser bacterial reduction better than traditional cleanings?
Laser bacterial reduction can reach areas that traditional cleanings cannot, making it a very effective way to complement more conventional treatments. For example, while traditional cleanings can only remove bacteria from the surface, the laser can reach far beneath the inflamed tissue to eliminate bacteria in a way that simply isn’t possible with regular methods. As such, we advise our Northridge patients to add laser bacterial reduction to their regular treatments for the most comprehensive and effective prevention of gum disease.
Caring for your gums at home
As important as laser bacterial reduction and other professional cleanings are for your gum health, there’s no substitute for consistent at-home care. Your optimal gum health begins with you, and the choices you make every day. To that end, we strongly recommend practicing optimal oral hygiene on a regular basis – gently brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day and rinsing with a specialized mouthwash that targets gum disease bacteria. These steps, along with your in-office professional treatments, will ensure that your gums remain healthy and strong for as long as possible.
Once they are created, we will provide you with your custom trays. You’ll wear a new tray aligner every two weeks to move your teeth along a predetermined course, gradually shifting them into a straight and healthy position. Throughout this entire process, you’ll wear your trays for a minimum of 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, brush your teeth and floss. Every six weeks, you’ll return to our office so we can examine your teeth, evaluate your progress and make tweaks to your treatment plan as necessary. Once your treatment is complete and your straight and beautiful new smile has been revealed, we may advise you to continue wearing your final tray aligner at night to ensure you’re able to preserve your new smile for years to come.
